`TAMARIND' MAY BECOME MOVIE

A Four Corners author and publisher may have a movie made out of one of her books. The deal is not confirmed yet, but the very fact some Hollywood producers are talking with the author is encouraging.

Swanee Ballman of Jawbone Publishing Co. has been in California talking about the possible film.

The author of the book "Tamarind" said she is going back in January for more talks.

"Tamarind" is a Florida mystery tale using locales in the state as background.

The book attracted many readers when it was published about four years ago and is a favorite of some Florida readers.

Ballman has published many books by local authors and is noted for her encouragement of writers and authors. She publishes books with moral themes and values.

GROUPS HELP WRITERS

Several authors from Four Corners have published books.

One is Sandy Simmons who has a new novel and is leader of the group of writers who meet at Citrus Ridge Library.

Other groups are in Clermont and in Haines City.

Another group affiliated with writers meets one Saturday a month at Lake Wales Library.

The writers formed groups to exchange their books and ideas.

If you are a writer and need support it is a good idea to join one of the groups.

Contact a library near you or ask at your community center where you may join.

WHOOPING CRANES SPOTTED

Three of the rare whooping cranes that are trying to make a comeback were spotted at Overstreet Landing on Lake Kissimmee this week.

They were mixed with a flock of sandhill cranes. The whooping cranes are larger and mostly white so they stand out in a flock of smaller sandhills.

There was one flock of about 100 sandhills in the area.

In addition to three whooping cranes, four eagles were spotted, including two on one pole on Overstreet Road.

During two hours of birdwatching on the road and at the landing, 26 species of birds were spotted.

The former pasture land has been turned into sod farms that attract flocks of kildeer and many kestrels. Flocks of tree swallows were seen flying in great circles.

Overstreet Road is about 35 miles south of St. Cloud in southern Osceola County.

SHOPPING CENTER ALMOST DONE

The newest shopping center for the Poinciana area is nearly finished on Southport Road.

It will consist of about 15 retail stores and parking and be set back from the road. It is adjacent to the new Southport Bay development of homes.

Shaped in a crescent form, the shops will be convenient to the new development as well as all of Poinciana. It will complement the Oakbridge Commerce Park adjoining it.

The new stores will be about a minute from the Poinciana entrance gateway and close to the Wilderness and Cypress Cove. Latest reports are that there will be a variety of stores and perhaps a restaurant.

The center will have two towers and a second story.

Southport Road leads to Lake Toho and the South Port Park and Boggy Creek Airboat rides.
